In-ground electric dog fence installation is a relatively simple weekend DIY project. With the right installation supplies and instructions you can have your electric dog fence up and running in as little as an afternoon. In-ground dog fence installation requires the right supplies in the right amounts and some basic tools you may have, can borrow, or can rent at your local hardware store.
All in ground electric dog fences require some basic installation elements including a transmitter unit, burial-grade wire, waterproof wire splices, and training flags. Most in-ground electric dog fence systems come standard with enough of each of these supplies to create a simple, single loop installation of about 1/3 acre. Creating a detailed installation plan is the first step in deciding which electric dog fence is right for you and choosing the right installation supplies.
Dog Fence Wire: Dog fence wire is burial grade electrical wire used to create a perimeter loop that begins and ends at your electric dog fence transmitter box. Not all dog fence wire is created equal, the larger the guage and higher quality the wire the more durable your electric dog fence wire will be. Using a pro-grade electric dog fence wire is a great way to guard against future wire breaks that are time-consuming to find and can be diffcult to repair. Factory grade underground fence wire (the wire that comes standard with most electric fence kits) is a generic weather resistent wire coated in a non-waterproof vinyl. Pro-grade underground dog fence wire, on the other hand, uses a 45 mililiter polyethelene jacket to ensure complete waterproofing.
Pre-Twisted Dog Fence Wire: Neutral areas (where your dog can pass over the buried wire without receiving a correction) are created by twisting two pieces of dog fence wire together. The twisted wires neutralize one another's signal effectively creating a dead zone. You can make your own twisted wire with two pieces of perimeter wire and an electric drill or you can purchase pretwisted wire. Most electric dog fence system kits do not include any amount of twisted wire. Creating short twisted wire sections is not difficult to do but you will need to start with two pieces of wire that are at least twice the length you want your finished twisted wire segment to be. If you have long stretches of twisted wire in your layout plan it may be worth purchasing pre-twisted wire to avoid the hassle and mess of twisting long sections.
Waterproof Wire Splices: Buried dog fence wire must be waterproof to avoid corrosion and other damage that will cause the wire to fail. Waterproof wire splices are used to join sections of wire and just about every installation will require some amount of splicing. The more complicated the electric dog fence layout plan, the more wire splices you'll need. A waterproof wire splice is essentially a little plastic capsule filled with gel that will hold the exposed ends of your spliced wire keeping them safe from water even underground. Most electric dog fence kits come with two waterproof wire splices. Use your plan to determine how many you'll need.
Training Flags: Training flags are used to temporarily mark the perimeter of your electric dog fence installation while your dog learns the layout of his new boundaries. Since the wire is buried the dog needs a visual guide to the edges of his territory while he learns the rules. As you progress through the training process and your dog begins to remember where the boundary is, you'll slowly remove the training flags. Like wire and splices, most electric dog fence kits come with enough training flags to cover a simple layout on 1/3 acre. If your planned installation is larger than that or includes internal loops (lake loops) you'll need to purchase additional training flags.
Surge Protection: A surge protector is an important way to protect your investment. Pro-grade surge protectors take the hit if there is an electrical surge, ensuring your dog fence system won't be affected. Surge protection is easy to use and compatble with all of our electric dog fence systems (unless otherwise stated on the product page).
Waterproof Transmitter Housing & Outlet Cover: A waterproof transmitter box allows you to install your electric dog fence transmitter outside rather than in your home or garage. The outlet cover ensures a water-free plug-in.
